Donald R. Schmitt is an American researcher of UFOs and extraterrestrial life. He is particularly known for his work investigating the alleged Roswell UFO incident, which occurred in July 1947 near Roswell, New Mexico. Schmitt has authored multiple books on this topic, including "The Truth About the UFO Crash at Roswell" (1990) and "Witness to Roswell" (2007).

Schmitt was born in Ironton, Ohio, in 1947. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology from Concordia University in Minnesota and a Master of Arts degree in criminal justice from the University of Detroit. He began researching UFOs in the 1970s and joined the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) in 1986.

In addition to his work on Roswell, Schmitt has investigated other alleged UFO sightings and encounters, and has appeared on numerous television and radio programs to discuss his findings. He has also served as director of special investigations for MUFON and as a board member of the Center for UFO Studies (CUFOS).
